A theory from a die strike expert: "I think the blank planchett was resting on the reverse die when the obverse die struck the coin the first time. This strike was off-centre, meaning that while the reverse was perfectly centred, the obverse was not. The coiner probably thought "Oh no!", struck the coin again slightly off centre but closer to normal. The reverse received a double strike because it shifted slightly off of the die from the impact of the first strike. Or maybe the coiner shifted it after picking it up and inspected it before putting it back for the 2nd hit." China - (1917) Yokohama Specie Bank $10 PMG VF 25 Extremely rare banknote from Hankow province in China. This Japanese bank was set up in China with the partial goal of helping to fund military operations such as the Russo-Japanese war, WW1 and then later China and the rest of Asia during the Sino-Japanese war and WW2. It also played a significant role in Japanese colonial ambitions and overseas trade. The funds were often used to buy military supplies and fund strategic operations around the continent and the Pacific. They even had a branch in Honolulu, which as seized after Pearl Habour. After WW2, the bank was rebranded as the Bank of Tokyo established by American occupation authorities before finally liquidating in 1963. For sale. Hong Kong (1940) 5 Dollar HSBC banknote. "Duress issue." When Hong Kong was invaded by the Japanese and fell in 1941, the Imperial army confiscated all metals, including coins, to fuel their war effort. This led to a shortage in circulating currency and until a substitute could be created (an occupation note) the soldiers forced staff at banks to continue issuing local notes. There are many stories of foreign and local citizens who lived in internment/prison camps but worked in offices under new Japanese management. Some worked for the underground or resistance and later paid with their lives. These "duress" notes were considered invalid by the British government for obvious reasons but as to not create unwanted economic difficulties on local citizens when the colony was liberated in 1945, the bank decided that any notes that fell into this time period were to be "honoured" by them. In order to do this, the bank had to pay back the difference in British Sterling to the tune of HKD$16 million. This greatly helped to restore public confidence in the economy and was in part one of the reasons for Hong Kong's rapid growth from 600,000 people to 1.6 million within 5 years. In the above picture you can see the major difference between the two notes is the vertical serial number on the right-hand side. I didn't want anyone to get hurt so I didn't share the news but I believe these are from the shipwreck of the SS Japan - More specifically the first batch bought and seen before 2016. It appears someone from the US came to China and bought a bunch and got them graded anyway they could. Obviously since the shipwreck is unknown they are just shown as "effect" but the dates, mints and damage all match what I've seen before. I have won one piece which I hope to investigate and scan for myself. But did not expect to see these - let alone 16 pieces! The first card shows the attack on Pearl Harbour, the next shows the surrender of the British at the Battle of Singapore and the final is from the Battle of Hong Kong. The postcards come with stamps printed on them that feature a Samurai and the ink chop has another commemoration of the harbour attack. I rarely get into philatelic products but when it's WW2 related I can't not be interested in it. After all, my grandfather was present and fighting against the Japanese in Hong Kong at the same time Pearl Harbor was going on. Ever since I picked up this M3 Yen I've been very happy with it as an historical example of how quickly Japan had to modernise in order to keep up with the times. Little did I know I could exceed those levels when PCGS announced their special label series for Meiji Dragon Yen. The pearl colours and bordering dragons do not detract from the quality of the coin and help to set the stage for what is on display. People always say "Buy the coin, not the grade." and I think this helps that as your eyes are drawn away from the label and score. You end up enjoying the coin as a story rather than an investment object. I hope PCGS continues with these series not just with trade dollars but other countries and coin types too! Thanks to @pcgsasia for the help and excellent service. Their special label service for this type only lasts for this year so if you want to get one, find a nice Yen and submit it ASAP!
